Newbie: does Slackware 9.1 automatically create partitions?
Hi All
Gonna try Slackware 9.1. Does it automatically create the partitions? If not, what are the safe settings? I'll be installing on a hard drive that currently uses just Mandrake 9.2. Thanks very much :) |
are you uninstalling mandrake? or setting up dual boot?
no it's not automatic. safe setting is all but twice your ram for the install and twice your ram for swap two partitions, easy.. then figure out if you want to change it.. |
Well, if you've got some unpartitioned free space on your drive a simple setup is to just create a Root and Swap partition - however, (if youve already got a swap partition on your drive in use with Mandrake, then Slackware will recognise this existing Swap partition during setup, and ask you if you want to use it with Slackware aswell) - just say yes, (if its suitable)(ie you can share a Swap partition between distributions)
After you've logged in as root user you can type cfdisk to bring up a menu in which you can create your partition(s) remember, once you've created your Root partition ( or any others ), write the partition table to disk to save the changes - you can then reboot and carry on with setup |
I found the following tutorial (mentioned elsewhere in this forum, too):
http://www.wireless-linux.com/tutorials/slack9.1.php There are so many details. Plus, I still have to tweak a few of the details mentioned in the tutorial above (which is for a Gateway laptop, not a generic desktop). We'll see how it goes. Thanks very much :) |
