my screen don't accept xf86config
Hi,
I've installed slackware9.1. I tried several xf86config configurations, but each time my screen refuses the config and go back to the text mode when i run startx. I can't run the "SuperProbe" command to see what video material has been detected. I get the message:(when "startx") " virtual height (0) too small screen found, but no usable config." My screen is a 15' & works OK at 800x600 85 Hz under win2k, rh9 & suse9.1 slack runs the bare.i kernel. My video card is a ATI Rage 2000Pro, 32MB CPU Athlon 900 Mhz MB Asus A7V via chipset Thanks for any suggestions. |
Yo,
Check out www.monitorworld.com and look up your monitor. Write down the horizontal and vertical sync frequencies and then manually input them when you do xf86config. Let me know how that works. It works like a champ on my slack box :) Peace, Whitehat |
have already tried
Hi Whitehat,
thanks for the reply. My screen is a second category (microspot) & i can't find info about it. But I've checked my rh parameters & have choosen similar frq synch first and then lower frq. Even with the lightest config it fails. So i have no idea what's wrong. |
Have a look at the XF86Config file for one of your other distros and see what's being used there, maybe even copy it into Slack.

I have entered exactly the same rh9 Monitor, screen & device parameters.
And now it returns me an error related to the Default depth mode (the 1). Note that I've choosen the 16 b mode. I read some posts suggesting kernel changes. Could have sthg to see with the kernel bare.i? I'v already tried to reinstall the full slack package & problem remains. thanks |

Not sure what you mean that you can't find info about it. I have a Compaq V75 17" monitor on my Slackware box and here is what I found on it at www.monitorworld.com Model: V75 Max Resolution: 1280 x 1024 Sync Type: Seperate H Freq/ V Freq: 30-69 / 47.5-125 Tube Manufacturer: Monitor Type: Tube Model: Tube Size: 17 Connector: HD-15 I have bolded the item that is most important. (disclaimer)Let me also say, don't put my info into your Config file. That is a recipe for disaster. I'm just using it as an example :) How about posting your XF86Config file here for us? Peace, ;) Whitehat |
Thanks guys,
I've copied my rh RF86config into slack & changed some "devices' name" to make the file coherent. Now i can run startx. The mouse cursor remains static , so certainly the config mouse file-name in slack differs from rh. I'm checking it now. Anyway i'm already very happy to see how rich is the slack develop rubric as i've decided to improve my prog knowledge. Until now i 've only had problems with develop environnemts.Tried without success to install phyton -tkinter in Suse, install sun-java in rh but couldnt compile with javac...Now everything I need is given, the only problem is the mouse-cursor...So, I'm quite satisfied. Thanks again |
