migrated to new CPU/GPU, where/how to set it up?
 

My previous (Legacy-BIOS) box was built like 15 years ago and I just upgraded to an EFI board with a Ryzen-9900x/Rx760xt combo. After having dd'd Slackware and other distros over to the EFI machine booting was set up with grub from Tumbleweed and works without problems but in Slackware starx does not. I haven't tinkered in xconfig in too many years. Is there another way to bring up X short of a reinstall?

When trying to run startx, do you get any error messages at screen? Or anything in /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?

Are you trying to run a 15 year old Slackware (version 13.0?) installation on new hardware? If so, you are probably going to need to upgrade to a newer Slackware.

Have you been able to successfully load any modules (check with lsmod) matching your running kernel? Do you find anything related to graphics in the output of dmesg?

Write a note to self: dd is not a good way to copy.

In this case depending on your command, you may have attempted to write disk information we don't normally see but the system relies on. I would reinstall, which is quick.

1. Remake the Slackware partitions with mkfs.
2. rsync over the data. Install 15.0 or ~Current, not an ancient distro.
