Installing without CD Drive

Hi there,

I just got a Windows XP laptop as a hand-me-down from my dad. I want to resize the NTFS partition and dualboot it to try out Slackware. However, there's a small problem - the laptop has no floppy drive, and its CDRW drive doesn't work. I do however have a 256MB USB drive, the ability to network my laptop with my main box (which has the .iso's for slackware), and a desire to learn how to do this. Any suggestions?

I was thinking of getting some sort of live cd distro on my usb drive, then, using ftpfs, mount my main box's drive, and then, using a loopback mount, mount the iso's and install them from there. Any other ways of doing this?

Thanks!

You might want to look at:
Cooperative Linux: http://www.colinux.org/
Puppy Linux: http://www.goosee.com/puppy/
QEMU-Puppy: http://www.erikveen.dds.nl/qemupuppy/index.html

You will probably want to make sure you have USB (or USBZIP) as
a boot option in your BIOS.
I suspect most of these systems will require using another linux system
for installation (ie. one that _will_ boot from CD)

Did you consider PXE installation. It should not be a problem if your BIOS supports it.
