Installing Slackware on a SONY VAIO T series, cannot boot by USB
 

I have a laptop Sony Vaio T series with Windows 8.1 and I need to keep it. The series is SVT131336CYS
I want to install Slackware 14.1 on it. I tried follow the instruction

I created a USB Flash Drive with the ISO, tried it on another computer which booted fine. But when I tried booting it on the Sony Vaio, it does not recognize the key as bootable (Operating System Not Found). I did read the file README_UEFI.TXT of Patrick come with 14.1 and saw that there is one thing that might be the trouble is I have to disable Secure Boot, but I cannot find it any where.

Can any of you let me know where is my problem?

Update: I have disabled Secure Boot, the result still the same.

I believe something is wrong with the ability of Sony Vaio to recognize a USB boot stick. I borrowed an external DVD drive and was able to boot up with the installation disk

I don't think this is a solution or the answer to the problem, but rather a workaround. I got an external DVD drive, boot from it, and was able to install using the Slackware DVD. But later on, when selecting source, it did not recognize the DVD from the external drive, but was able to recognize the source from the USB stick (the same stick it could not recognize at boot time).

Firstly have you changed your bios to boot from USB-HDD? If not change it and try again. Might even be worth trying all the variants of USB media like USB-FDD etc.


I have a similar experience when I want to start from USB boot sticks on my ancient desktop with Windows XP. This is what I do.

1.
Insert USB boot stick into USB port.

2.
Boot machine. It always starts Windows XP.

3.
View contents of USB boot stick with Windows Explorer.

4.
Don't unmount boot stick just restart machine.

5.
Machine boots from USB boot stick.


Of course this might not work for you, but worth a try.
