Installing OpenOffice 4.0 on SlackWare 14.0
OS:
SlackWare 14.0, 32-bit, graphical interface - KDE Desktop 4.8.5. Laptop: Dell Inspiron 6000, dedicated to Linux, no MS software Background: I have a Calligra office suit that came with the SlackWare. It is buggy and crashes often. Hence I installed OpenOffice 4.0 on my laptop. Thanks to 'vid4ken'; he has uploaded an excellent tutorial on how to do it on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lF_MLko6N8I. The utilities, 'rpm2tgz' and 'installpkg' worked like magic. Whoever wrote them have done an awesome job. Everything works! On the Terminal Emulator, I can give the command 'swriter &' or 'scalc &' and the corresponding OpenOffice program just pops up, BUT Problem: I do have OpenOffice menu, listing all programs, word, spreadsheet, etc., on my application launcher. When I click on any of those entries, nothing happens. Any ideas as to why this is happening? |
Hey,
Have you checked the menu editor, Im guessing maybe the command for launch is not correct, since they work fine from the command prompt. Just right click on the KDE icon bottom left (or wherever you have it), then go to menu editor. check command for the word, spreadsheet etc. |
DutchGeek,
Thank you very much. I am so damn embarrassed for not exploring around, following the SlackWare credo. Here is the solution for the rest of us:
