Install a different kernel during Slackware installation?
 

This might be a really stupid question: Towards the end of a Slackware 9.1 install, it asks which kernel I want to install. Can I just download the kernel 2.6.7 from kernel.org, and install that instead of the kernel on the Installation CD?
I am going to reinstall Slackware to get my partitions right, and thought I could "kill 2 birds with one stone", so to speak!

It's not that simple. The Slack CDs come a few pre-compiled kernels for some variations in hardware. The latest kernels from kernel.org are just the source, which you have to compile yourself.

Mate, I see no harm in installing the slackware stock kernel since you don't have to select any options. Once you've gone through your first boot, then install your custom kernel onlong side the stock kernel; this way you've got something stable to fall back on.

Just my view, along with the fact I don't think it is possible to install a custom kernel during the installation.

OK, thanks! Guess I'll be learning how to compile a kernel in the next week or so, but that's ok! This is my summer project...

There are instructions here: http://www.slackware.com/faq/do_faq....installation#4 to put a custom kernel on the boot disk. Not sur eif that is what you mean. As I think was mentoined before though....you would have to compile the kernel...the ones on kernel.org are jsut source. If you are planning on doing a clean isntall anyway I would recommend just doing the install with the default kernel and goign from there.
