I'm not sure what to do - Slack won't start up

Alright, I installed slack, and now I reboot and it starts up the command prompt, everything is configured, so I am not sure what to do now. I tried 'startkde' but that didn't work because I could not connect to the x server. I'm not sure what to do.
Any suggestions?

Try "startx"
If that doesnt work use pkgtool and install a default window manager (kde, gnome.wm, etc)

Hmmm, that didn't work. This is my first time with Slackware. Any other suggestions?

OK A couple of questions:
What version did you install ?
What type of install did you do? (full, newbie,?)

Using 'startx' in root, I recieve = Fatl IO error 104 on x server
Using 'startkde' in root, I receive = cannot connect to x server

What do you mean by IM? Yahoo Instant Messenger?

joe83 01-29-2005 12:34 PM

OK, get all the info you can find on your monitor, video card, etc.
have it handy and as root type:
xorgconfig
This will ask you questions regarding hardware etc, and create a file for X to initialize from.
Just follow the prompts and everything should work.

Yes. Or AOL :o which I can also use, but you'd have to notify me first as I rarely have it on.

Lintux 01-29-2005 12:48 PM

ahh okay. I think I am close to figuring it out. I went through xorgconfig, saved it. Now when I try startx I get :

Fatal server error
could not open default cursor font 'cursor'

joe83 01-29-2005 01:08 PM

OK, try this:
type (as root) pkgtool, go to the "installation scripts to run again " part, select the fontconfig option and then reboot.
And try again.:Pengy:
