How To Set Up Dual Boot Windows/slackware

I don't know how useful this is, but I know there are a lot of extreme newbies like me here, so I figured I'd share this.

How to get Win2K/XP dual booting with Slackware.

1. Boot the Windows CD-ROM and make sure all partitions are totally deleted. It should just say something like "Unpartitioned space" or something similar.
2. Create a partition for Windows, whatever size you want. Go ahead and format it and install Windows. Of course, be sure to leave enough space for Linux and a Linux swap partition.
3. Once Windows is installed, boot the Slackware CD1.
4. Login as root, run cfdisk. Add a new primary partition for Linux, and add a new logical partition for Linux swap. Be sure to set the type to "Linux swap" (82).
5. The partitions should be listed in this order: Windows, Linux, Linux swap. Leave any other settings alone (i.e. "bootable").
6. Write the partition table, and quit.
7. Run setup, install Slackware as usual. Install lilo in the MBR.

That's all there is to it. Please feel free to post corrections/improvements on the above info.

Good, and also, IIRC, in www.tldp.org you can find a guide to do it backwards (aka install linux first, then windows)

Thanks, certainly helped me out as a fellow extreme newbie.

Of course, if you've already got Windows installed, then you need to:
1: Disable the page file
2: Reboot
3: Defragment
4: Resize (using QtParted on Knoppix, GParted live CD, whatever).
5: Re-enable page file

Then install Slackware.

Hi,

Brian, you did look at the OP date? :)

Loads of people are resurrecting quite a few dated posts. :D

No, :o , missed looking at it this time. It's not long since I was commenting on someone else doing the same thing. :)

Hi,

I fell into that trap a while back too. :)
