how to set keyboard map for xwindows

can anybody help me? i can't find where i set the keyboard map for xwindows from the default us map to a ukmap? i have looked in the x11 directory but can't find the file i need to edit.
also, having opened a new tty (not in x) i have noticed that color is turned off. i have to append --color every time i do a listing. can anybody tell me how to set this as default?

I honestly don't know the setting for a UK keyboard but the file should be /etc/X11/XF86Config in slackware and most other distros, I have seen XF86Config-4 used also.
