I've just installed Slackware on my comp, everything went pretty good, but now when I boot linux after all that text and device loading and stuff, it wants me to log in... goes something like, darkstar login: "WHAT THE HECK GOES HERE"
and then is asks for my password, guess that's the root pass
Anyone knows what to do here, I dont remember setting a user name or anything like that...
Ok, so now I know my problem sounds kinda stupid... but what if I skipped the setting a user name part, I know I can change that later, but what about a default user name or something like that?
did you set the root password during installation, if so at the login prompt type root followed by the password, if you didnt typing root should just login you in ( assuming because of the way the does this). To add a user use the add user script ( type adduser) try the man page for options
Towards the end of the INSTALLATION you are prompted to enter a password for root. For some reason you must be overlooking this. Then after the install is complete and you boot up and get to the first login you will need to type in root AND the password you entered during the installation. Then, as root you can adduserand then go from there.
At the "darkstar" prompt (BTW, when it has 'darkstar', you didn't run 'netconfig' during setup, either...)you type 'root'
Then it says 'password' type the one you used during setup.
From the looks of things, you may have borked a good chunk of the setup...
But that's OK. It can be fixed.
Easiest way for a newbie, like you, is to run the setup again by booting the install cd/dvd. Go through the steps again, EXCEPT: Don't format your partitions! And when you choose the 'package series', only pick one, like 'y'(games...it's small). Deselect all the others.
Now, when it asks you for your computer name, enter whatever you wish: mine happens to be 'toaster'. Domain name: Anything you want. I still use 'mshome.net' because the wife still has her XP...). Then choose "dhcp". This setup will work 90% of the time...
When it asks you for a root password, type whatever you want. JUST REMEMBER IT!
Make all the same choices you did before, because your system was able to boot, so don't monkey with it. (Yet. Monkey with it later, you will, Young Skywalker. You will...).
I had to reinstall, and I did get to log in, so I'm really happy and excited about that, thanks a lot,
The bad news is, and you said it right, I'm a newbie, and dont know what to do next, too much text. I checked on the slackware site and printed out all the system startup instructions, but I'm still lost...
It's an actual book (available in as a web page and as a PDF file, among other formats) with great information for newbies using Slackware.
Read the Slackbook to find out about configuring sound and the windows manager: two steps that take a few minutes to a half an hour after the initial installation.
Ok, so I did it, I configured inittab so that it'd run multiuser mode (number 4)... so I rebooted, and after the whole loading thing it said something like... starting X11, or something like that, like it was actually going into graphics now. Then it blinked like 3 times, and kept saying the same thing forever but nothing happened. I tried again and got the same response...
Yeah man, I've tried just about everything... and I had to make a whole new thread cuz now it's a totally different problem, but still no one will respond
