Are you making a 100% linux computer or do you want to keep Win98 around for a while yet?

This 350MHz machine... how much RAM do you have and what is the CPU?

How have you been attempting the install?

How have you been trying to create the linux partition?

Please note: there are more newbie freindly distros than slack (though it is excellent). Have you seen:

Hi,

Do you read the boot screen for Slackware?

You will need to use fdisk or cfdisk to delete your old win98 partition. Then create your linux partitions using the same.

Once you create your linux partitions and write the partition table. You can then run the setup program.

You could read some of the references in my sig to get some background information. A little research will payoff.

tell us about the partition(s) you've created... you will need at least two.
have you looked through the links in gwsandvik's sig?
have you read the instructions on the slackware boot screen?
how are you trying to "format" the partition(s)?

Linux partition number is 83, swap - 82. Type L to list codes of all partition types.

What means scan for Slackware, not found it? After creating the required partitions, you need to reboot, boot from the Slackware cd1 some kernel (like bare.i), type setup and run installation (do full install). In the lilo screen choose expert and write lilo to mbr (it's the easiest way). If you have windows, add them for lilo to boot. After installation (when you go back to console), run reboot. After reboot, you should find lilo screen with the Slackware option (boot it).
