Unhappy Hangs up on install kernal boot

When I boot up the Slackware install disk, I reach the "boot:" prompt, as I should. I then enter "bare.i". It then starts to boot up, but hangs up after printing the line "hde: IDE-device driver attached," or something very similar. I wait, but nothing happens for several minutes, so I have to reboot. Anybody have any idea what's up? I've tried other boot images, but they all have the same problem.

I have a SATA hard drive, if that is any significance.

This IS significant. Try a SCSI kernel instead, but not sure.
