Fresh install Slackware64 -15 and no possibility to update slackpkg

Hi everyone,
I am a newbie on Slackware after years of other distros.
The install is ok with a DE without problem except slackpkg... All mirrors that I have tried (one after one I precise) seem not have repo for slackware64-15.
I probably miss something...
thanks !

There is no stable release of Slackware 15.0 yet. The slackware-current you apparently installed, is our development version, currently with a "Beta" tag.
The slackpkg package which is part of Slackware-current has a mirrors file full of URLs pointing to a "slackware64-15.0" but since this is a release that does not yet exist, all these URLs are not working.
If you change "15.0" into "current" you should be able to get the updates working.
But my concern is: if you do not know the difference between our "current" stable release 14.2, and our "-current" development release (note the dash), you may have picked the wrong ISO to install from.
The development or 'beta' tag means, there'll be lots of changes per week, sometimes even per day, some of them will break the software you compiled yourself, and you need to have more than a basic knowledge of Slackware to keep up to date and avoid pitfalls.

Hi, welcome.

slackpkg list of mirrors includes addresses of the mirrors that will be created for Slackware 15.0

Slackware 14.2 is still the latest stable release of Slackware. Choose one of the mirrors below
line 207 of /etc/slackpkg/mirrors. Then try 'slackpkg update' again.

When 15.0 beta does become stable the mirrors for Slackware64-15.0 will be accessible.

Thanks for your answers.
I have installed the 15 version because I have a recent laptop with SSD drive (and not HDD).
I didn't find solutions to install Slackware. But it may exists ?

Hi,

Thank you for your answers !
In fact, I just like install a Slackware version which works with SSD. I probably made a mistake in downloading the ISO file.
I will try to find a 14.2 current and see if it works

SSDs should work fine with 14.2. What is not supported with 14.2 (out of the box) is NVMe drives. If your SSD shows up as a normal /dev/sdX drive, then the 14.2 installer will work with it fine.

However, if you have a recent laptop, there's a strong possibility that other hardware within your laptop won't be supported properly by 14.2.

There isn't a "14.2 current". You can either download the latest stable release ISO, which is 14.2, or you can download a -current ISO, which is the development version of Slackware and will ultimately lead to the next stable release of Slackware (which will be 15.0) once Pat feels it is ready and releases it.

Unfortunately, due to the length of time since 14.2 has been released, there is a lot of new hardware out there that is not properly supported by 14.2. This means you're likely left with three options:
  • run a potentially broken 14.2 install
  • run a development version of Slackware (which will occasionally require 3rd-party software to be recompiled when libraries are updated)
  • run something other than Slackware

well my couple cents worth of thought would be to use Mr. Hameleers rad live-dvd which will drop you off in the shallow end of the pool so to speak with a kde-gui to look at instead of the delightful MoTD and darkstar login: there is also a script you can run from the shell named "setup2hd" should you find that the live dvd is everything you ever needed and more of course :P There are also a couple of mirrors that slap together the vanilla installer iso of the -current tree; (IIRC the same gentleman has also made available a script that will roll you an iso from current) but i've generally just been patient for the OG iso to be released and/or in a pickle for time used the live iso with great success.

There's a way to install 14.2 on an NVME drive, provided by Eric
https://alien.slackbook.org/blog/bui...all-slackware/

BUT! IT's not easy for a beginner, but still worth a reading if you're interested.

I did follow these instructions, but not in full. When I built me a new desktop last summer. (I did end up with a -current installation instead).
