While installing the packages off of disk1 for 10.2 I get fatal errors for about 95%-100% of the packages in /xap and /ap, otherwise all the other packages were installed just fine.

I had the same problem, almost all the packages in the ap, n, and l install directories came up with fatal errors, something about <package> could not be installed, the installation media may be bad...md5 checksum on the iso matched what it was supposed to be. So I'm just going back to 10.1, that seems to be installing fine, then maybe i can upgrade from a working system.
Redstar, I think I may know your problem, you should try burning the iso's at 1x, it will take forever, but it worked for me, cuz 10.1 and gentoo didn't.
