fatal error attempting to install /var/log/mount/slackware/a/kernel-modules-smp-2.6.2
 

Hi!

I'm trying to install Slack 12.1 on my laptop - Celeron, 4Gb RAM, SATA 250G HDD.

I'm getting the following error during installation:

"There was a fatal error attempting to install /var/log/mount/slackware/a/kernel-modules-smp-2.6.21.5_smp.i686-2.tgz. The package may be corrupt, the installation media may be bad, or something else has caused the package to be unable to read without error. You may hit enter to continue if you wish, but if this is an important required package then your installation may not work as-is."

I found another thread here with a similar problem ( http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...atting-607175/ ) but it was reolved by changing the RAM, it was a hardware probem. I've checked all my hardware and everything seems to be fine. I had Ubuntu running on my laptop before and no problems.

I've burned a new image file at the lowest possible speed and had the exact same problem at the same stage of installation, so I don't think the image is the problem.

Any ideas on how to work this one out?

Hi,

I would check the md5sum. If you downloaded the cd/dvd iso then be sure to check the md5sum for the original iso. From the cli;

If the iso md5 is ok then you should try 'CdromMd5sumsAfterBurning''.

This way you will know if the burn was OK!

This will check the download iso with the known md5sum that you also get with the iso.

Thanks, I'll check that out. Strange thing is after ignoring the errors (several during install) everything seemed to be working for a while. After I reboot I had several errors with startx and could only use the command line.

I'm trying a fresh install again.

It does sound like a bad md5sum so you are probably wasting time. Checkout the md5sum and re-burn then compare the final image to the original as I suggested.

I've burned a new image and I checked like you said, the image is ok. I still get the same error at the same stage of installation with the new disk.

Now that you know your 'iso' is good you should now check your system memory. You can use 'memtest86' to test. Knoppix has it, so you could launch from the boot:.

I would let it run overnight if possible.

Thanks. I did the mem check before I posted this. This is how to person in the other thread (link in my first post) got this solved, but my memory is ok and the CD image is fine.

I appreciate you trying to help but I'll have to go back to ubuntu for now. Maybe I'll try again in a few weeks and if I find out what the problem is I'll post in this thread the solution.

Try booting with acpi=off

Sorry to dig out this thread, as I have experienced rather similar issues, five error messages occurred during my installation, like However, I forgot to write down the names of those five packages, so my question is where can I find out their names now, so I can install them again after downloading from the internet..

It would have been better to create a new thread as that would get you exposure for your problem.

You confirmed the md5sum for the ISO and the media?

As for the corrupt packages you can grab them from a mirror. But are you sure the rest is valid? I would check my download ISO, burn the image at a slow speed and then compare the burnt image on the media to the original hash.

Appreciate your kind reply, and the laptop is running quite well, so those missing pkgs don't create too much trouble so far. What I am concerned is future usage, and some issues may come up someday when I try to install any apps.
