Error Loading Operating System

Hi all,

I got an old hdd a few days ago and decided to give Slackware a try.
After following all the steps and installing the full system without any problems, i get stuck with the LILO installation (doesn't work on either root or mbr). I've tried the installation without LILO, since i'm not planning on installing any other OS on that drive, but as soon as I reboot it just can't load the OS and says something like 'Error Loading Operating System' (maybe slightly different, since I translated it from German).
Possibly a mistake in the MBR? If yes, how could i repair it (without a floppy, cause I don't have a floppy-drive built in) ?

Thanks,
pd

Is the partition's bootable flag set. Run fdisk from the installation CD to do this, then install lilo to MBR, or at least to a floppy.

Yes, the bootable flag was set to the root-partition. I tried installing it onto another drive, but once again the same error occurs. I assume that either i'm overlooking some fault of mine while installing or the cd might be deficient. I'll get 9.1 to see if that works out any better, otherwise i'll build in a floppy drive and give that a trial, though it should work without, i guess

tnx

Try running lilo -v -t
So you can get a little error output and post that.

Well, I already installed 9.1 now and it made no problems. Thus I can assume that the problems were due to the cds?

And is there an easy way to update from 9.1 to 10?

BEST way is to follow the howto in UPGRADE.TXT in the main directory of either install CD#1.

I found a way to install 10 correctly in the meantime I just had to choose the expert LILO-configuration and it worked without trouble. Probably could have done this much easier by just editing my primal lilo.config or updating 9 (but somehow was willing to check if it would work out this way).
So now it's running fine and i'm happy,

tnx a lot though
