I recently downloaded Slackware 12.1 onto my computer
(ISOed it onto a DVD) with the intention of dual booting it with my Windows XP Pro SP3 already on there. I have a 250GB Hdd on an Extensa 5620 Acer Notebook.

My hard drive partioned currently is as follows:

113.24GB (Windows XP Pro and system programs) C:

58.59GB (Windows XP Pro games and music etc) D:

and

55.19 GB Un Allocated (Intended for the Linux installation, i will have 2 GB for swap space)

My problem is this, when I try to install a partion on the un allocated space all I get is 4096MB free space it does not even acknowledge the 50+ Gigs free space. Before I go to Fdisk or Cfdisk it says "Opened disk read-only - you have no permission to write"????

Even if I try to create the 4G partition it still doesn't let me install the program. Any ideas?? ?

If you just run "cfdisk", it will use /dev/hda as the default device, which may or may not be your hard disk. Is your hard disk a SATA device? If so, you want to run "cfdisk /dev/sda" and then you should be able to partition it. You might also want to post the output of "fdisk -l" here so we can see, if you're unsure about what kinds of disks you have in your machine.

Once you boot the install cd/dvd you can do a 'fdisk -l' to see what disks the kernel is aware of. Post that to the forum. You can do a 'fdisk /dev/your_device' or 'cfdisk /dev/your_device' to start the partitioning. I prefer 'fdisk'. Once you create the partitions on your system you should reboot the system to insure that the kernel partition table is indeed updated.

Please post any errors that you may get in any session.
