Can't help with this problem per se, but I can confirm Slack installs (and runs) fine on the 1100.
I installed a while back, so it wasn't 10.2, but it went clean. In fact this (work) laptop triple boots Slack, Gentoo and XP - and yes, it's a bit tight on (disk) space...
Never had any problems with mounting CDs (or even X for that matter). You should be good to go.
