Debian is now much easier to install than Slackware ( it uses a simple text based installer). The best way to install Debian is to use the net install ISO ( about 158 MB), boot from that and pull down all your packages from the Internet.
Debian Etch isn't my main distro, but I have it installed on one box at home and several boxes at work.
