Can't find hard disk

I have recently aquired a HP ProLiant pl150 server as a new toy. I have been trying to install slack on it but am failing becuase i can't find the hard disk to partition it.

This is a Adaptec SATA raid low level driver and a 250gb SATA drive. My knowledge of devices allocation in linux is not very broad. I have figured out that hda is being allocated to the cdrom (ide) and that none of the sd* channels work for the hard drive. I checked the /proc/devices file and there was no listing of the hard drive there for any of the boot kernels on the 10.1 install disk.

Has anyone got any thoughts on how i might find the device?

Try booting a Knoppix CD and see if Knoppix can tell you where the device is.

i am experiencing a problem. i tried to install RHL - 9 on my Compaq Presario PC and got a msg "No Hard Drives detected". However Windows is running on my PC and when i tried to install Ubuntu-Linux for Human Beings, it detected the presence of the hard drive and showed the existing partitions.

I tried to find the HDD driver thru windows but got nothing matching with the manually loadable drivers in RHL that r listed during installation.

the hard disk in my PC is a SATA one and its number is WDC- followed by some numbers.

plz,can anyone bail me out from this predicament?

A little more information

Wow, and I thought this topic had died a long time ago

The make of the hard disk isn't too important as far as I know. What needs to happen is that you need to load the kernel module for the sata controller, on the motherboard, before you start to install.

Firstly, you need to find out what the sata controller is. This can be done usually by looking in the manual and finding the chipset that the motherboard uses. It is usually something along the lines of a "Broadcom" or "VIA" chipset. If you can't find it or aren't sure, post the exact model of the pressario that you have and i'll have a hunt for it.

Once you know the chipset, you can look for the chipset driver. The module can then be loaded during the red hat install. I seem to remember something about being able to load modules during the install , ( I have never really used Red Hat but I'll grab a spare pc and run an install to check after breakfast) , so it should be easy once you have the right module.
