Blank screen with a blinking cursor after installing Slackware 13.1
Friends,
Yesterday I managed to install Slackware 13.1 after manually selecting the packages and using cfdisk. After every thing was done, the message said "Press xyz keys to reboot your system" (I do not remember what those xyz keys were). After pressing those keys I took out the DVD. The system restarted and there was a blank screen with a blinking cursor. Any idea what did I miss there ? EDIT I partitioned it as follows: root : bootable : primary home : logical |
Try booting in your new system with the DVD - how to do that is explained on the greeting screen - then (re)run lilo.

Hope this helps. |

May be you are correct, I shall re-install it today, and I shall uncheck only the packages which I know and understand. |

Here by booting do you mean that I should reinstall Slack ? and what is the method to re-run Lilo ? |
and one more question:

Still, it would be much safer to make a full install. The only good reason not to do that is if you are really very short on disk space. |
look and see ...

Slackware is very easy really; you will like it... I know nothing of bash, programming, etc and get along fine with Slackwre, my fav I can barely type hello world, much less in a "language" lol I suggest you do a reinstall if possible.... |

But let Didier explain where I need to write that code for replacing sda1 ! EDIt Didier replied before this post. --Anisha |
Didier,
Thanks for the effort :hattip: I shall respond to that post of yours after 1 or 2 days. Thanks again. |
Didier
After running that command some processing happened on the screen, but it again showed some error which I do not remember right now. Then I tried to reinstall the whole system again, and to my horror I remembered that last time I had un-checked the first option of "Packages to be installed", The first option is "Base system and Linux kernel". This time I did not modify anything and thus could install Slackware and after rebooting I received a terminal, I did not know what to do after that !! Thank you for trying to help me out ! |

Log in as root, then run: Code:
adduser anisha After that, if you want to boot into a desktop and not the console, run this: Code:
nano /etc/inittab Code:
id:3:initdefault: |
I assume, you've made this time a FULL install and all processed normal?
If you do so, then you've changed the password for root. Right? So login in the terminal als root with your new password Create a new user with 'adduser' logout as root and login as the new user Select your gui with 'xwmconfig' After that try to start the gui with 'startx'. In most cases this will be successfull. Btw, it's not a bad idea to have a look into the slackbook: http://www.slackbook.org/ |
Briany and wingevil,
Thanks for your replies, But at this speed I think it will take me weeks to get Slackware *properly* installed and configured on my laptop. I think it is better for me to have a dual boot of Suse and Slack till I learn to tweek Slack. |
