Question Blank screen issue w/ 10.2

Hi all, in short i'd like to comment that this is my first Linux distribution ever, so if the answer to my question is simple, please don't be so eager to jump down my newb throat about it

Basically I downloaded and installed the first two Slackware 10.2 cd's without any issue. After the install was complete and I was asked to reboot the machine I did, where I was greeted with the prompt to login. I logged in as root and then used "startx" to start fluxbox which I still haven't encountered any issues. After testing out a few programs and becoming familiar with fluxbox I decided to logout.

The problem that occurs is whenever I try to logout it goes to a completly blank screen, where I'm forced to manually shut off my machine by the power button.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Since I'm a complete newb I only tried what I could think of which was:

1. Reinstall Slackware using no frame buffer.
1. Reinstall Slackware with the bareacpi.i kernel instead of bare.i

First thing: Did you run 'xorgsetup' or 'xorgconfig' before you started xwindows?

Second: What are you system specs? Run 'lspci' and post the results.

Third: with the 'bareacpi' kernel, did you install that as the kernel at the end of the install? Or use it only at the beginning?

The next time you experience the blank screen toggle to a different virtual terminal using Alt-Fx or Ctrl-Alt-Fx, where Fx is one of the function keys (F2 through F6). You are already using terminal session one controlled by (Ctrl)-Alt-F1. BTW, if you are using a default keymap then you must use the Left Alt key.

Log in at that new terminal session as root. Then run ps ax to view what programs and processes are running. Use the kill command to kill any X session still running. Then toggle back to your original screen using (Ctrl)-Alt-F1. Hopefully you see a screen prompt.

This will not solve the root cause of the blank screen or hangup, but at least provides you a back door to troubleshooting.

You can post the output of the ps ax command here at LQ and the sharper Slackers can then help you. To redirect the output of ps type ps ax > ps.txt and then you can copy and paste the ps.txt file.

Hi. I'm running into similar problems on my Ubuntu/Fluxbox desktop.
After logout, reboot, halt or by just trying to restart X, my screen goes blank. Then all processes seem to stop and nothing happens. I can't switch to another terminal session via Alt Fx either. This happened after I installed a new monitor.

My xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI RADEON X800"
Driver "fglrx"
BusID "PCI:5:0:0"
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
Option "dpms"
HorizSync 30-81
VertRefresh 56-75
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "ATI RADEON X800"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 1
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 4
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Im thankful for any advice that might be helpful!

Hi,

Welcome to Slackware LQ forum!

You should create a new thread to allow more people to respond to your problems. You could request that a mod move the thread.

Ubuntu has a forum on LQ.

Alright! I'll post my question in the Ubuntu LQ forum instead, requesting a delete on this thread.
