3rd install and still cant log in
This is driving me absolutely nut's. I just picked up a gateway plll 1ghz , 256 ram 20g hd ,
Thought I'd give Slackware 10.1 a try. I downloaded both ISO's checked my md5sum everything checked out. I used fdisk to partition my hard drive which is actually very simple since I'm still a newbie I'm not running a dual boot so my partition is just my swap 256 x2, and one large partition for Slackware. I used the Reisersf format the install and everything goes smooth but when its complete and reboots and I come to the login promt I enter my user name and password and keep getting login incorrect. I've tried reinstalling 3 time's now just to make sure I did'nt accidentally hit a wrong key when I setup my password. I hope somebody can help me with this. I'll try another install if I have too, or is there another way to get into the system and correct the problem? Thank's. |
I figured it out I typed in root and then my password I've been using Fedora core 3 which is a little different , but I dont like the idea of typing in root and then password isnt this a risk factor ?

I got my user login and graphical login window figured out and up. Looks like I'll still have some work to do to get every thing set up and working thats the fun in learning. Fedora is good for what it is but you don't learn a whole lot.

I was "born and raised" on slackware, when i started with linux it was the only game out there. Haven't used any others! Luckily the su command is your friend (and if you are using KDE so is kdesu!)

Are there any good books that could be recommended for slack, for a newbie? I'm quite comfortable with terminal and can find my way around files and folders ect..
it looks like I'm going to have to get every thing setup and configured manually. so far I don't have sound, I also have to configure Dhcp to get my Ethernet working. I've been reading allot of the other threads and it seems that it may be best if I upgraded to the 2.6 kernel which is something I wanted to learn also. I really would appreciate any help with this or to be pointed in the right direction Thanks!!! |
