First off, I've searched for a similar thread with no success, so forgive me if I'm posting an already addressed issue.
Secondly, I'm running Slackware 10.1 on a Dell 5150, P4 w/HT & nVidia (64meg @ 1400x1050). I know how to install the grafix driver, and the wireless driver. No problems
Third, and most important - my problem. I've been trying to compile the latest kernel. The pre-installed kernel is kinda slow. I've not found the 2.6.10 kernel on the site, so I stuck with the latest. I've been through the very nice slackersbible.org and still can't get the kernel to boot. I do have the old kernel in the lilo, but get a kernel panic every time with the new one. The xorg file isn't configured so I can't see what is actually causing the panic because the font's too big (vga=792 doesn't work) and because it locks up. The last thing I can see is a long code, followed by <0>kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
I've not tried the test kernel from cd#2, and that's my next venture. I've tried all file systems, (ext2, 3 and reiserfs), been through the kernel configurator and selected them. I've not added the mknitrd stuff from slackersbible because when I try, I get an error that says the modules aren't there.
I'll be working on a more exact question later, and in the meantime try to use the test kernel. Just thought I'd ask some of the most intelligent people around!
P.S. I really recommend Slack despite this small issue, lol!
