Slackware ARM on the Orange Pi ?

The Orange Pi could make it on the list of officially supported devices under Slackware ARM.

If you think that's a great idea and would like to endorse it, please vote proactively for this poll:

The Orange Pi will be used for testing and development.

Thanks,

sndwvs, I mean no disrespect when I say I'm not a great fan of pre-built Slackware ARM images. I believe it takes away some of the enjoyment, and certainly the learning curve, of having to install it yourself from scratch. Additional to that, pre-built images are somebody else's idea of what a Slackware system should be, and what it should contain. When I build a Slackware system it's usually for a purpose. Most of the time I don't need anywhere near the number of packages that come with a full install and I can customise the package selection to suit my specific requirements during the installer setup. I can't do that with pre-built images. Each to their own way, I know, but in my mind you can't beat installing and configuring Slackware yourself.

<edit> The last pre-built Slackware ARM image I tested on the Orange Pi Plus was from this thread and it was an experience I try hard not to remember, but find very difficult to forget. It looked like someone had taken various parts of other distros, loaded them into a cannon, and fired it 'point-blank' at an SD card! It worked as an OS, after a fashion, but it certainly wasn't Slackware ARM.

I am, however, a fan of the Orange Pi Plus. I've been waiting patiently for over a year for H3 support to be included in the mainstream kernel tree. Looks like we're still waiting. If/when the H3 is (ever) supported I'll be getting hold of a Orange Pi Plus 2 for sure! I'd be running Slackware ARM on it (of course) and I'm pretty certain it would be my favourite and preferred ARM device. MoZes has said he's interested in looking into the H3 Orange Pi version(s), "once the H3 support hits the mainstream kernel". So that's cool.

According to this blog, it should be possible.

Johannes

Work should be like both 3.4.113 and with the last kernel

SCerovec 05-25-2017 07:36 AM

Did anyone actually booted it into an H2 MCU so far?

Do you have I2C working with your kernel?
It doesn't seem that I2C is available for the H3 in 4.14, unless I'm just missing something pretty obvious?
