midnight commander; white lines don't render

I just installed slackwarearm current on two banana pro's. When I run midnight commander there are rectangles preceded by lower case a's with a ^ over the a's instead of the usual white lines that border and divide sections of midnight commander. This occurs both with a UART connection and an ssh connection (both wired and wireless).

I had also tried to us nmtui to set up wireless when connected via UART to one of the pro's and the lines surrounding and dividing the nmtui interface were also just symbols.

Has anyone else had a similar experience using nmtui and mc?

This is only a problem when using xfce4-terminal to access a banana pro via ssh. If I use xterm or uxterm both midnight commander and nmtui display properly. By changing the language setting in /etc/profile.d/lang.sh from "export LANG=en_US.UTF-8" to "export LANG=en_AU" both midnight commander and nmtui display properly in xfce4-terminal.
