Do you guys have up to date Sarpi kernels, firmware, and modules? If the issue is a graphics card issue, then the firmware is the best place to start. Hopefully the Sarpi maintainer, Exaga, will chime in with some ideas. Sarpi has kernel 5.10.31- along with the latest stuff from the Raspberry Pi foundation.

I cannot say if this is a bug that updated Sarpi packages will resolve or if it is a KDE (upstream responsibility) bug. I am unable to reproduce what was reported here. All I can suggest is a fresh installation. OR remove KDE and clear out all your settings, cached files, and reinstall KDE.

I'm running the 5.10.31 kernel & the other 5.10.31 packages here. I agree on trying removal/clearing/reinstallation of KDE. I'll get to that eventually.

@Desiderius - Referencing the screenshot in post #2: in the upper left corner of the System Settings window, the three horizontal bars beside the Search bar is what you're looking for. Clicking on those bars brings up the Configure link, ---> General settings, --> View Settings. Works for me. I found the settings on my Slackware-current box and fished around on my Pi until I found them there.

I believe you that the bug is present. I left my Pi 4 running over night with KDE idle. I thought maybe I needed to wait a while to see the same results you two are experiencing. I am still unable to reproduce the same conditions. I also am not sure this can be reported to KDE as a bug. Upgrades in -current have sometimes caused issues for me. A fresh installation fixes issues like this in most cases.

I am also running the kernel 5.10.31 all the stuff from Raspeeri Pi foundation from SARPI.

@netcrawl Thanks a lot ! I have found the configuration, put it in "Icon view" and it works : I have all the options visisble !

This let me think that there is really a bug !

Moreover, I think I have found it also in Kmail : it works normally to retrieve my mailbox but when i click on a mail to view its contents => black window there also !

Good to hear that worked for you. <edit>I can confirm that it happens in kmail, too! Saved a draft email and the display screen is black when re-opened. Now I'm curious to see if it occurs in other programs.

You mentioned earlier in the thread that there are existing bug reports for this in KDE. Do either of you know the bug # for a similar or exact report?

It appears to be an issue with using the dual display drivers. Commenting out "dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d" in rpi4boot/config.txt fixes it on reboot.

Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully Exaga will make note of this when he is online again. I have one large monitor I share with 4 devices using an HDMI switch. I hadn't even considered it to be a bug with video core while using two monitors.

Incredible !

Yes commenting out "dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d" makes all the applications work as expected: system settings and kmail in particular !

Thanks @netcrawl !

Curiously it has however a side-effect : I was logging through SDMM after putting the value "4" in /etc/inittab !

Now, in spite of the value "4" in /etc/inittab , no window manager is starting !

Impossible to start a WM with the Run Level 4 ! I wanted to mark this thread as solved but it is not yet completely.

So I decided to go back and to enable again "dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d" in config.txt.

Reboot ... the login window of SDDM appears ! So there is well a connection with the dtoverlays property.

Mechanically I launch System Settings waiting for the black window and ... the normal window appears with the list on the left side !

As said in X-Files, the truth is elsewhere !

Perhaps an explanation !!

When I log with SDDM, I have a little task bar on the bottom :

- Virtual keyboard : to get a virtual keyboard to type the password
- Desktop : where you can choose various desktops

1 ) I choose "Plasma X11" as a desktop ( my initial choice ) and logs in

test of system settings : black window !

2 ) I choose "Plasma wayland" as a desktop and logs in

test of system settings : window bright and correct !

Is it to say that the driver vc4-fkms-v3d only works correctly with wayland ?

Definitely there is a problem between vc4-fkms-v3d and X11 !

I had also a problem I did not understand with VLC : all the videos I was looking at seemed blurred and distorted !

Here I look at the same video ( with Plasma Wayland ) and the video is fine !

So to summarize, if you have a double HDMI outputs on the RPI :

- either disable "dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d" in boot/config.txt

- or enable it but be sure to use the Plasma Wayland desktop
