I thought it was clear reading the list that the OP was using DE in a casual rather than a precise sense.

Yes, it is clear to most people here. It might, however, not be as clear to some members/visitors who do not know the distinction between the two leading to some unnecessary misconceptions. Obviously, it may not be an important thing, just thought it's worth pointing it out for the benefit of new linux users who might be reading this thread. Besides, the site's major aim, I assume, is to provide clear and factual information on relevant subjects. Ignoring confusing things in the posts might not be helping. Anyway, no big deal. Let us move on.

I'm using Fluxbox since the first days with Slackware. In the past (Suse 7.3) I was a KDE user.

I use KDE. I like it, so I don't know what else to say.

KDE has been my favorite desktop environment for years. But I don't love it very much anymore. Dare I say it? KDE has become a pig of incomprehensible girth. If you have a quad-core system with 8GB or more RAM, you may not very often notice where all your resources are being consumed. Yet woe unto those with a paltry 4GB RAM and a piddly old duo-core CPU ... you will know great pain at the hand of Nepomuk/Akonadi/Kontact/Virtuoso. They will eat your lunch.

I long for the days when KDE was just a great desktop. I prefer an asocial desktop without any semantics.

Thanks btw to the person in this forum who pointed out the Arch user who ported it from OpenBSD. It looks like it was mostly only a matter of changing BSD's makefile to a GNU one, but still, saved me some time.

I couldn't agree more. I've been using FVWM since 1996 (on Sun SparcStation 2).

Regarding Java: it's Java programs that use the Swing toolkit that cause problems. Java programs that use the SWT toolkit work beautifully with FVWM.
