Congratulations on your first kernel compile. Any reason in particular it took you so many tries?

Trial and error?

Not knowing which modules to select entirely. I knew which ones to choose, but I saw Intel and Radeon and ATI and things from my lspci output kind of scattered throughout, so i was loading everything. I had to decifer all the unnecessary from the necessary. But what really got me was the failure to load or mount root on 802. It probably wasn't literally 13 times or so, but it was definitely at least 6 to 8 times. I was jsut worried and paniced a lot. But all is well..

Now for the next, even more impossible it seems, task -- installing my ati video card. >.!!

Usually to not have such a large headache ... or have to smoke anything ... I start with one of the configs from another kernel and add and/or subtract from that. I remember that I tried to configure one from scratch ... and I must say it took long enough that I gave up and went to plan B ... which is the plan I just described.
