Noteworthy:
*- XMMS has skins and they are compatible to old Nullsoft's Winamp skins (v2.x)
*- And the skins support a small skin (a.k.a. roll-up) that fits a window title bar
**- Audacious supports also Winamp skins (zipped and unzipped)
their skin depos are:
.xmms/Skins/
and
.config/audacious/Skins/
Just put the zip archives there
There where many free winamp skins on the net a while a go...
Audacious is also not very resource hungry, but has few more advanced options compared to XMMS
I'll give XMMS a spin I'm not a fan of Audacious.
Thanks-
Juk is installed I've just haven't launched it yet-
I had only tried it when I went through my "multimedia" menu to see what audio programs came with default Slackware. First time I've ever opened it up.
I wonder why your mplayer has a GUI. By default, mplayer does not include a GUI. How do you launch mplayer? Is it by commandline or clicking on an m3u or mp3 (or whatever file extension you use) file? I know there's several frontends for mplayer, but I believe the only one that might be included with Slackware is gmplayer, which is pretty basic, and I believe it isn't really maintained any more.
I'm all for upping my knowledge on Slackware and mplayer
BTW, I spoke with another Guru on this and he was not able to duplicate the issue I have with myplayer and xscreensaver.
I'm pretty sure this is a bug.
When you get a chance bassmadrigal would you mind?.... turn on screensaver and play a video or audio and see if mplayer locks up on you when the screensaver launches?

We all need this. Upping ones game from time to time is good stimuli for the brain.
I'm glad that you have an interest because this is driving me NUTS!

I'll try to remember to do this tomorrow after I get home from work. I'll have to try to figure out how to get the screensaver running, because I currently don't use it and just have my monitors go to standby after 20 minutes.

Under XFCE it's Applications> Settings> Screensaver.
Once screensaver launches choose 'Only one screensaver'
here check XMMS vs Audacious (screenshot)
(as root copy XMMS' skins to audacious' shared dir (as seen in terminal with mc) by decompressing first (just "enter" the archive in mc)
The skin is xmms-skins-ater but there are others...

I haven't had a chance to try this on my 14.2 install yet (it's running the htpc and me and my wife have been using it tonight), but I did do a quick test on my 14.1 install and I didn't see any pauses occurring when the screensaver came on (although, I just manually started it rather than waiting for the timeout).
And a quick check of the 14.1 mplayer, it seems if you open it using the option in the context menu, it is actually opening gmplayer. That's how you were able to get a GUI. Unfortunately, I don't have a skin installed to see if playback is different with the GUI vs commandline (I did leave out the -vo null option). However, I'm having a hard time finding if gmplayer is even being developed. It seems most would prefer to use some other front-end (my personal preference is smplayer).
I'll still try to find some time to check it downstairs, but it may not happen until tomorrow.

XMMS looks much more appealing. Thanks for the screenshot.
Are the skins hard to change?
Well, that would depend, on what You are accustomed for, wouldn't it?
I find it harder to find a skin i particularly like, than to make it used. But then I'm around computers since the 8 bit era...
The procedure:
1. acquire the winamp skin package on the net
2. make it a zipped folder
3. for XMMS go to ~/.xmms/Skins/ and have the skin copied there
4. for Audacious go to ~/.local/share/audacious/Skins
After that all You have to do is to choose the skin in the players menu
