Back with slack... but gotta prob.

So I am once again. . . rockin' the slack.
And it's good to be back.

But here is one problem that I have. . .

I can't stand using the 'radeon' driver from xorg. . . it's slow and renders things oddly in some cases...
So I use the 'fglrx' driver from ATi for my Radeon 9000 Pro.
Everything works fine but one thing... XV.

It's a known bug that xv does not work with fglrx drivers in xorg 6.7.

This is my problem. . . I need xv to work...

So I gave xorg 6.8 a try. . . got the packages from linuxpackages.net.

With xorg 6.8 . . . 2D worked just fine... but anything 3D locks the system. . . and that includes just checking if 3D is up and running. . .(fglrxinfo). . .

I would like to use xorg 6.8. . . with the fglrx driver. . . and have 3D, XV, and everything working.

Has anyone else had trouble with 6.8? and the fglrx drivers with it?
How is the preformence of the 'radeon' drivers in 6.8 vs. 6.7?

quick question about xorg 6.8

which programs can use it's features? (like true transparency, and whatnot. .)

slackMeUp - I have merged your 2 threads since they are really all one problem.

Well, you're not alone - I had this problem with Xorg 6.8.0 and ATi 3.12.0 - everything that involved rendering crashed including glxinfo, fglrxinfo etc...a complete system freeze if I remember correctly.

I also couldn't get any normal 2D graphics with the 'radeon' or 'ati' (Xorg bundled drivers) - it was horribly rendered.

So in the end, I'm sorry to say I just gave up - Xorg 6.8.0 is nice, especially if you have a Nvidia card (since you can then use the Nvidia card for rendering the transparencies), but it seems that with an ATi card it's useless

I hope someone is able to come up with a solution, but from my view, just use 6.7.0 :)

That's just to bad.. .

because with xorg 6.7 and the ATi fglrx drivers, XV does not work... and as much as I love rendering my video in GL, I really need a working XV.

It's a known bug... but because ATi does not support xorg yet. .. (just xfree4.1, 4.2, 4.3) they have yet to release a fix for xorg 6.7.

I heard the in xorg 6.8 the bug was fixed. .. but I also need 3D support just as much as XV.

I would go back to xfree 4.3 . . .but with slack built on xorg. . .I fear that it would break something if not now, then with patch releases.

sigh...

If anyone has another solution please post it.

You can check up previous post about xorg 6.8 where I requested for screenshots in the post. Firefox is what I can remember from the numerous screenshots.

I think metacity in Gnome 2.8 supports transparency. Xfce 4.2 should have it too & there are patches for kde 3.3 available which will add transparency / shadows support.

Apart from these you can download transset & xcompmgr from cvs although I think they're included in the slackware-current packages.

The Composite extension (whish is responsible for True Transparency & shadows & what not) is currently niether very stable & nor very speedy. Another thing, These effects are usable on most nVidia cards & radeons below 9200 also support hardware RENDER acceleration. The included radeon driver (Xorg) doesnt support 3D features & hardware acceleration for RENDER extesnsion for any radeon over 9500 & are thus very slow & unusable. ATI proprietory Drivers (fglrx) support is non existent for XOrg 6.8, I hope they update drivers soon.

great.......... i own a Radeon 9800 XT........ next upgrade i'm buying an nVidia. Also, the best luck i'v had with Transparency and Radeon is using the Vesa driver.....

Well I'm still having a problem with XV...

What's funny about it... when I googled "fglrx xv xorg" this damn thread came up as the first result.

Sigh...

slackMeUp 10-16-2004 12:06 AM

YAY!!!!!
I found the solution!!! However, it's more of a temp thing... but it works!

I'll post it in a new thread...
