Xorg 6.8.1 - I am really stupid.

Just when I think I am doing well in linux!

So I was playing around with fluxbox in X.org 6.7.0 and thought it was cool, so I decided to try to upgrade to 6.8.1 (slackware-current) I download all the happy little .tgz files and do a "upgradepkg packagename.tgz"

After that I tried a "startx" and it said that needed a new version of glibc. So I went back to the slack package browser and got the new glibc and did an upgradepkg on it, and all other glibc-* packages.

Ok, so I do a startx and it says that it can't find various driver (keyboard, mouse, etc.) So I restarted my machine. Now I don't even have network access!!!!

What did I do wrong? Will a kernel recompile fix this?

Thanks,

Sam

swinchen,

I've noticed that in a few of the package upgrages for X in the config file the keyboard driver is spelled with a capital K. Take a look at /etc/X11/xorg.conf and see if the driver is spelled with a captial K. If so, drop it down to lowercase and then startx again.

Oh thanks man! That saved me! And for some reason the network just worked this morning, huh. Ok, I am still having a few little problems with X that I am trying to work out... here is snippets from my Xorg.log file. Anyone know what is going on here?

the best thing to do is to reconfigure your xserver from scratch if you have update problems. I did the same recently on Slack and running "xorgconfig" solved my problems.

Ok, just tried that no change.

I also tried uninstalling, and reinstalling the nvidia driver and that complained saying that the kernel has to be compiled with respect to the current glibc version.... so I am in the process of that now

I was having similar problems last week and discovered that by using xorgcfg I was able to fix them when xorgconfig failed to. Just run xorgcfg -textmode from your command line.

I'm not sure what it does differently than xorgconfig, but it fixed my problem.

Well the kernel recompile fixed the nvidia driver problem, but I am still getting the strange warnings and errors from X.org, and Fluxbox. Not really sure where to go from here
