xmms doesn't play mp3, but plays audio cd

after playin with the sound configuration in xmms the player doesn't play mp3 files
but plays audio cd....

i ran alsaconf and the soundcard is identified and configuration was saved.
but still the same
i changed trough different output-plugins still the same
but i think i noticed that the soundcard (ess1869) is not longer listed
in the oss plugin under audiodevice and i do not know how to bring it back in there
or to assign the alternative device ( /dev/dsp )
it only says default

who knows how to fix it ?
which files should i post ?

Do you have libmpg123 installed?

You can left click on xmms, select options, select preferences, and check audio I/O and see if mpg1/2/3 is there...

I think by default, xmms doesn't play mp3 files and you have to install the mp3 plugin but I am not sure. I don't see slackware doing this.

Slackware will play mp3 out of the box. Are you sure that you installed xmms from the Slackware cd? Which window manager are you using? If it's KDE, it will sometimes hold on to the soundcard for a short amount of time. If you try using xmms during that time, it won't work.

hello
you can change the audio driver from XMMS options, try ALSA driver. just to assure you, in slackware you don't have to install anything to play mp3 files. try using another player (like noatun) and you'll see.

This is true for Fedora
One more reason to choose Slackware
