xine engine failed to start
Hi everybody I'm having problems watching videos sometimes they show up and sometimes they do not . The Video player that I am using is named Gxine the most common error message is
[No input plugin found.
Maybe the file does not exist, has wrong permissions or
URL syntax error.]
I'm using Slackware 10.2 Any information on how to fix this annoying error message will be very much appreciated.

Do you have all the appropriate codecs installed? If not, download them from mplayerhq.hu (downloads -> other binary codecs) and copy them to /usr/lib/win32.

Are you trying to watch video files embedded in a webpage (i.e. streaming off of the internet) or are you trying to watch the file off of a cd or hard drive?
I wrote up a howto on this, let me dig up the link:
http://www.slackersbible.org/node/92
I think Gxine is just a different frontend for Xine, I don't use gxine so I'm unfamiliar with it, but it sounds like you're just missing a codec (if you're trying to load a video off of a cd or your hard drive). If you can't play any movies that means you either don't have any window codecs installed, or that gxine is looking for them in the wrong place.

Hi everybody thanks for responding to my message
I downloaded the essential codecs that are located at this website over a year ago http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/dload.html

All the above sometimes they'll play sometimes they don't. I figured that I might need to update Win 32 codecs to a newer version. That or Un install xine, and install another Video Mpg player.
Thanks for the replies I appreciate them very much.

I just now typed totem inside of the run menu nothing happened I don't think the program exist. Real player, Noatun, Gxine video player, xine media player, are all listed under multimedia. Xine along with G xine are the only Mplayers giving me a hard time, everything else is working fine.
I'm most certain that the problem has something to do with Xine or G xine.

I'm going from memory, so this may be a little sketchy. When you launch the video (or try to) in Xine, there should be a selection within one of the menus (right click on the video screen) that tells you what codec the video is encoded in. If you can find the name of the codec you need, you should be able to search the internet for it, download it, and install it into that codecs directory.
