Ximian Red Carpet (and all Ximian stuff)
 

I was wondering if anyone has used Red Carpet to keep Evolution up to date ? I know I can go and download the source of Evolution 1.2.1, but i'm not really sure how to get rid of the old version of Evolution. The same deal applies with Mozilla, i'd like to use the newer version but what is a good way to get rid of the old version? Any advice/tips would be appreciated.

Well run pkgtool and remove the packages you don't want, then go see if they have slackpacks, if they don't, compile and install from source.
At least that's how i would do it...

I use the Ximian Evolution that comes with Slack (current) if that makes any difference. Quite a wonderful program if you ask me
:) I'm also quite partial to slackware's tgz packages as apposed to some source...but I do install a TON from source as well. For mozilla, the new version was already installed, I "think"....but I would have to reccomend looking for a package somewhere, possibly Linuxpackages.net may have some...then simply upgradepkg mozillawhatever.tgz (Obviously replace the whatever with the proper package name) or remove the old mozilla and installpkg the new one. If you're installing from source make sure you remove the package first then install the source.

The problem with Ximian is they have no pre-compiled software for slackware. They have RedHat 6.2,7.1,7.2,7.3,8.0, a couple versions of Suse, Debian, and Yellow Dog but I don't know if any of that is compatible. Also, they don't have source for RedCarpet but I guess what i'm really concerned with is whether or not the service would work under slackware. It's basically an updating system for Ximian's software so on the surface there doesn't seem like there should be any problems, but i know that is seldom the case.

I'm unsure what version of Evolution is in Slackware-current (or Mozilla for that matter) but I do know the versions that were in the 8.1 iso are out of date.

Anyway, thanks for the info on pkgtool, i knew it was there but i haven't really used it yet, i'm still just monkeying around with my slack computer. Also thanks for the responses.
