I SOLVED my problem.
this is what I think my problem was:
I have manually installed some fonts in a new folder (NOT of the X fonts packages) some times ago and used this fonts with many applications(kde, opera..etc)
I think that X upgrade don't recognize and setup this new folder correctly.
I have to exit from X server and editing /etc/fonts/font.conf to put my new folder in. This file configures the fc-cache command.
Try put your new fonts directory(s) in this xml file and rerun fc-cache out from X server and restart X.
Hope this helps , let me know
If you want XFree86 4.4 to support truetype perfectly, should do as the followings:
1. get xfree86 4.4 src files,change include/freetype/config/ftoption.h,
#define TT_CONFIG_OPTION_BYTECODE_INTERPRETER
change xc/config/cf/xf86site.def,uncomment about BYTECODE_INTERPRETER
2.recompile xfre86 4.4
if you see the wide spaced fonts, you should add the followings to /etc/fonts.conf
skedit
that last tip about spacing is spot on, thanks a lot.
I dont think you really meant truetype, however, as the spacing problem seems to occur on non-truetype fonts such as helvetica, charter, lucida, utopia etc.
I actually put your addition in ~/fonts.conf for helvetica and it works perfectly.
What I want to know is how did xfree86 4.4 break what worked ok before?
Did you trawl through fontconfig docs to work that out?
cheers

Some Asian fonts misadvertise themselves as monospaced when
in fact they are dual-spaced (half and full). This makes
FreeType very confused as it forces all widths to match.
Undo this magic by disabling the width forcing code -->
thanks skedit.
I have managed to get a satisfactory setup now, even without recompiling Xfree, using your tip. I was annoyed with myself for not finding the answer on my own.
thanks again.
