xfree86 4.4.0 and fglrx

alright here's probably my fourth post over the past year or so about problems with the finicky/crappy fglrx driver. this time it has to do with me upgrading via swaret xfree86 4.3.0 to 4.4.0 without thinking....if you use the fglrx module, you know that there's a version for xfree86 4.1,4.2 and 4.3. what they don't have yet is one for 4.4. compiling and loading of the module goes fine, but when i try to load up x with it, x won't boot. it says something about modules requirements aren't met or something, and i'm pretty sure its the fact that i'm running xf86 4.4.0 now, cuz it worked fine right before installing it (among many other new packages though). another question i have is that since i have an 875 chipset and have intel_agp loaded along with agpgart, do i need to say 'yes' in fglrxconfig when it asks me to use an external agpgart module? i know i did back when i had an nforce2 board, but it seemed work ok when i said 'no' to the question with this 875 chipset (before upgrading xfree86).

is there any way to get the drivers working on 4.4.0, or should i just got back to 4.3.0? anyone else have this problem? thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out

You've got too options to get your Radeon working now.

1) Roll back to 4.3.0. There are no official ATI drivers for 4.4 yet.
2) Use the Radeon module included in X. It works reasonably well with my Radeon 9000Pro, but it's not quite as fast as the fglrx module was. On the plus side, 3d and 2d accel work at the same time with the Radeon driver in X, but you only get one at a time with fglrx. Good 3d and crappy 2d, or Great 2d and no 3d.

I would first suggest simply changing the driver line in /etc/X11/XF86Config to radeon and give it a shot.

man radeon

for different options.

I'm not sure, however, if the included radeon driver yet supports the 9800.

thanks for the replies. after messin with it for a good while trying to get glxgears to work with the radeon driver, i figured out why 3d wasn't working

in the radeon man, this line is shown
R350 Radeon 9800PRO/9800SE/9800, FireGL X2 (2D only)

i guess i'll have to go back to 4.3.0. is it safe to upgradepkg to older versions? like would i be alright downloading/installing all the 4.3.0 pkgs again with swaret?
