xfce: Lock Screen

Today I decided I to try xfce! I created a test user to play with, simple lower case password. Didn't want to upset KDE by using my normal user id.

It was going well until I used the "Lock Screen" option - extreme right of the top panel.

I was then presented with a Black Screen.

I hit the Return Key and the screen changed to a screen that contains this text -

Code:

blank: Shows nothing but a black screen
Name: <User Name>@<Machine Name>
Password:
Enter password to unlock; Select icon to lock

There is also a square box to the left of the Name/Password
To the right of the Name it gives my Name as <User Name>@<Machine Name> where <User Name> is the locked user name and <Machine Name> is the machine name

I've entered my simple lowercase password 14 times and each time it gets rejected. What am I doing wrong?
It doesn't appear to be a caps lock issue as when a turn on Caps Lock the screen warns me that Caps Lock is on.

If I Ctrl-Alt F3 I get a command line prompt to enter a User/Password combination I can successfully log on. So it's not a keyboard problem. Though in this case I only have to enter the <User Name> not the <User Name>@<Machine Name>. At the command line if I enter <User Name>@<Machine Name> and the password It get's rejected.

Thanks for any help.

Does it have something to do with Xfce defaulting to a US keyboard, even if you chose a UK keyboard at setup? Do you have characters like " @ and ~ in your password? A virtual terminal would inherit the correct UK keyboard settings, but Xfce would not, until you change the layout in the Settings Manager.

Hi gezley

I'm using a simple password with only lower case letters. So I don't think the US keyboard should be an issue. Anyway, I'd changed it to an en-GB keyboard before experimenting with the Lock User button.

It's strange. I have just started Xfce on tty9 with xinit /usr/bin/startxfce -- :1 and it is xscreensaver which locks the screen. Based on your description earlier yours seems to be a different screen locker. Do you use GDM or KDM?

My normal user id used KDE so I suspect I must use KDM.
