SBO packages working OK. But, packages here are tar archives, it has to be built first and then installed, where as the earlier downloaded one was a direct .tgz package, which could be directly installed. Unfortunately, it did not work

You just experienced one of the reasons that Slackbuilds.org deals with software as source code.
In general Slackware values reliability and simple maintenance over clickity click 'I hope this works' ease of use.
