I scanned all later posts but found nothing specific on that ... even in 4.6 I had to set up keyboard shortcuts to make the volume keys to work. Found in Xfce Menu -> Settings -> Keyboard Settings. Add "aumix -v+5" and press the corresponding key afterwards to raise volume (by 5 points, change number to get a bigger change) and "aumix -v-5" to lower it, as well as "aumix -v0" to mute the audio volume. I hope the Settings look similar in 4.8, as I still have 4.6 installed due to lack of time.

Absolutely no offense intended, but I guess copying all the files once to CD or an USB memorystick will save you valuable time in the future. When I remember how long it took to write one floppy of not more than 1,44 MB and compare to how long it takes now to write to an USB stick, feels like at least 1/100th the time. Reading the floppies again and again takes you much more time in the long run I suspect.
Further more I have had very bad experiences with floppy disks, every now and then one died, even ones that I were new and shiny - a CD or an USB stick are not that prone to errors IMHO, at least that's what I experience here. I had to use floppies up until 2009 and have not looked back after I could switch to newer media.

titopoquito,

Thanks for taking the time to check out the volume problem.

I've decided to stick with Xfce 4.6.2. It does all I need to do without any of the problems present in 4.8. If and when 4.8.2 is released I'll take another look at it.

As to the floppies, I have a large box of them sorted and indexed and the amount of time it would take to transfer them to another medium just isn't worth it when the floppy drive works perfectly in Xfce 4.6.2 (and all versions to date of KDE).

Thanks, again.

If you are having transparency issues with 4.8, it looks like it's related to these bugs:

Robby, did you have any damage from the tornados?

Sorry if this has been mentioned somewhere in this thread - is 4.8 going to be included in -current any time soon?

Almost surely will be in this -current cycle, but not sure when - there's some other stuff that might need to happen first.

My daughters' "playground" (one of those prefab slide/swing/jungle gym things) was utterly destroyed, and I had a small piece of vinyl siding blow off of my storage building, but otherwise, nothing here. Given the alternatives, I'll take it. Thanks for asking! :-)

I'm glad you didn't have any damage and that you and your family are ok.

So I was doing some more researching of this mixer problem that some of us seem to be having. I tried this solution, comment #4 of the xfce4-mixer bug filed, and it seemed to work for me.

Hmm,

After open & close the mixer plugin's property dialog, it works fine on my system.
Adjusting volume by mouse wheel is available and tooltip appears now.

From Robby's changelog:

Quote:
Sat May 21 07:12:44 UTC 2011
Upgraded upower to 0.9.10
Upgraded media-player-info to 14
I guess this will be last of the updates ;-
Does this mean it's showing up in -current?

Heh, no, it was a (bad?) joke about the end of the world that happened about three hours ago. Oh wait...

The mounting problem is solved, I think. The mixer problem is one that I can't reproduce and thus don't know how to even begin solving.

The unusual solution I found in the bug for the mixer problem worked for me.

We (at least I) don't blame you, Robby. :-)

I haven't had a chance to look through what you changed so far, so what did you do? Did you implement the Arch solution that worked for me, or did you find another solution?

The old motherboard went south, so I've done a completely fresh install of Slackware64 13.37 and Xfce 4.8, with the replacement hardware.

Mounting external USB drives now works, but it still doesn't see the floppy.

The mixer problem has not been solved.

Removed 4.8 and have gone back to 4.6.2.
Someone please send up a flare when 4.8.x is finally ready for "prime time."

Thanks.
