Think I got it. The applet doesn't seem to be ported to 4.4

Where can I find ported applets at? Like the goodies for 4.3?

It looks like they're rearranging the furniture over there. Some plugins have been ported and some haven't.

Where can I find if they have been or not?

There is nothing noted anywhere. The only way I can find out right now is if I download, extract, then try to configure.

Right now, this process is a waste of time and diskspace. A simple 'ported to 4.4' line SOMEWHERE would have helped. There is NO mention of this 'irritant' anywhere. The only way to find if it's a ported app is to download it (wasting my bandwidth), extract it (wasting my diskspace), and then try to configure it (wasting my time). All three of which I have in limited quantities.

A little planning would have been nice. I found on a forum somewhere a link to ported apps, but the link is dead.

I'll give it one more try. But IMO, it's not ready for primetime at all. I do realize it's a beta, but some kinda docs, or as I said, a stinking line in the notes for the download, would be appreciated.

I don't like using berilios, BTW, seems I always have issues with anything to do with that site...Could just be coincidence, but...

I don't really use XFCE much, so it's kind of awkward for me to defend them. But if you click on "Visit Website" for say, the weather plugin, and then look at the upper left hand side under "Release", it says 4.4. I thought that meant that it had been ported. That's not correct?

Here's a quota from Xfce-goodies-dev list (datep Apr 19). Many plugins are indeed ported:

Quote:
UNKNOW
======
xfce4-trigger-launcher

DONE
====
*Tested
xfce4-messenger-plugin
xfce4-quicklauncher-plugin
xfce4-mount-plugin
xfdesktop -- menu plugin
xfce4-showdesktop-plugin
xfce4-battery-plugin
verve-plugin
xfce4-xkb-plugin
xfce4-fsguard-plugin
xfce4-clipman-plugin
xfce4-cpugraph-plugin
xfce4-diskperf-plugin
xfce4-genmon-plugin
xfce4-minicmd-plugin
xfce4-netload-plugin
xfce4-systemload-plugin
xfce4-weather-plugin (has some bug)
xfce4-screenshooter-plugin
xfce4-windowlist-plugin
xfce4-timer-plugin
xfce4-websearch-plugin
xfce4-xmms-plugin
(need to do "touch ./NEWS";
xmms is used by default, wich can be boring->can't you make it better autodetected?)
xfce4-mailwatch-plugin (no icon the first time the plugin is added -> need a default one)

*untested
xfce4-xfapplet-plugin 0.0.1 (under developement)
xfce4-i8k-plugin (being rewritten)
xfce4-mixer (libxfce4mcs taken from svn seems too old ==> I won't test it today)
xfce4-sensors-plugin (I must install libsensor to test this)

NOT DONE:
=======
xfce4-modemlights-plugin (I tested the version in svn, it doesn't seems to have been ported)
xfce4-megahertz-plugin (I tested the version in svn, it doesn't seems to have been ported)

xfce4-datetime-plugin (will be replaced by orage)
xfce4-notes-plugin (at least, not in trunk)
xfce4-wavelan-plugin(at least, not in trunk)
xfce4-lua-graph-plugin(at least, not in trunk)
xfce4-eyes(at least, not in trunk)
xfce4-bglist-editor(at least, not in trunk)

xfce4-teatime-plugin(compiles, but doesn't seem to work..., how does it work??? )
I think you could use SVN to grab the lates plugins:

Quote:
You can freely browse the sources by using ViewCVS or WebSVN. If you would like to download it, just use the following command:

svn checkout svn://svn.berlios.de/xfce-goodies/name_of_the_package/trunk name_of_the_package

According to your list, 'xfce4-battery-plugin' is ported, but in reality, it's not.

I have no idea where they are hiding it, if indeed it HAS been ported.

Neither http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel-plugins/start nor http://xfce-goodies.berlios.de/ has a ported version. (Actually, as far as I know, the berlios page has NO ported apps, and thats the 'official' goodies link on the XFce homepage)

I really need the battery app more than anything...

Actually they moved the server from berlios.de to xfce.org. Check this place and the svn access tips there:

I don't want the svn versions...Experimental doo-dads on top of beta software? No thanks.

But the link for the panel apps that are listed by you is the same I just posted...So the battery monitor plugin is NOT ported yet. (This is the point I'm trying to get across: Just because they say it's ported, does not mean it is ported yet. svn versions, as far as I'm concerned, is not 'ported' yet. It's experimental).

xfce 4.4 beta SlackBuild script and package

I've been working on this for a couple of weeks now, and I'm almost certain that I've got all the kinks worked out now. My xfce 4.4 beta 2 package results in all icons showing up properly (this was a frequently encountered problem on Slackware and derivatives) and Thunar supports changing file associations. The package is built for Slackware -current, so it's not an option for you if you're on 10.2 or earlier versions. If you'd prefer to build it yourself from source, my SlackBuild script and all sources (including the xfce goodies) are available here: http://slackbuilds.rlworkman.net/xfce-4.4/ or if you're running -current, you can get the package instead (http://slackpacks.rlworkman.net/). The script is pretty well documented on what's required to build (you'll need an additional perl module, for example, but it's not needed for runtime), and I've kept a rather detailed Change Log (http://slackpacks.rlworkman.net/current/ChangeLog.txt) that would be handy to read, if only to see how far it's come

Feedback is welcome - contact information is on my site.

RW

I originally got them from here: ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/xfce-goodie...l-plugins/4.4/
but since the repository moved over to the main xfce server, I'm not sure what's going on with them. As best I can tell, this will be where the new releases go: http://goodies.xfce.org/releases/

FWIW, the battery plugin has been chugging along happily without incident for me...

Sorry, I missed that you've already looked at that link. I'm actually an xfce-goodie developer myself, I maintain the xmms and timer plugins. I don't know what's going on with the battery plugin but the svn log for the autogen.sf file says

Quote:
update with version from Jasper - now compatible with Xfce-4.4
so it really should work. That "ported" list above was tested as well. Don't hesitate to use the svn version, almost all plugins are pretty stable. Indeed, most were simply ported to XFCE 4.4 API by changing a few function calls and are otherwise the same as the 4.2 versions.

I found something odd.

This this: Boot into KDE, create a bunch of app icons for your desktop (Rt click on them in the 'k' menu, 'send to desktop'.

Reboot to XFce, and there they are, up and functional.

Any ideas how to do this w/XFce alone?

Place a *.desktop file from /usr/share/applications (or any other location; even create your own) in the $HOME/Desktop directory.

However, I don't know how to update those in real-time (make them appear immediately; it requires a restart of xfce). There is a 'reload' option for xfdesktop, but that doesn't appear to work. That might make perfect sense though; to be honest, I don't know which component (xfwm ?) manages desktop icons.
