xfce 4.4 beta looks awfully sweet!!!
 

Just installed xfce 4.4 beta 1 on Slackware 10.2. I must say I'm really impressed in how xfce is improving. The new look and feel is very nice!! Also the Terminal program (requires vte library) is a pretty full featured Terminal (tabs, transparency, nice configurability, and good performance). For being a beta release, xfce 4.4 is pretty damn stable as well. Has anybody else tried this out? What do you think? Slack + Xfce is pretty hard to beat....

You should post a link to a screenshot on Imageshack or something. I'd like to see it myself.

I am a XFCE user myself, and I can't say I notice much different in those shots. Though it does seem like the systray is now visible even when there is nothing in it? Is that accurate?

The terminal looks nice for the default, but I already have all of those features from mrxvt.

There are some back-end improvements that I am interested in for XFCE 4.4 though, I will have to look at the changelog to see if any of the things I am waiting on have been addressed.

It looks like you've got icons, are they including those in XFCE these days?

i'm really looking forward to xfce 4.4... the main reason being the improved file manager, as the one with xfce 4.2.x.y really sucks... btw, that tabbed terminal also looks like great stuff...

i hope xfce 4.4 makes it into the next slackware release... :)

I really enjoy Xfce. For the longest time, I stuck with the 3.8 version throughout Slackware 9.* to 10.0, just 'cos I really liked the CDE feel to it. Then I succumbed to the lure of Xfce-4.* and am currently on 4.2.2 (the default Slackware 10.2 version).
I like its stability, and how - just like Slackware itself - stays out of the way of what I am doing when working or fooling around. Xfce is there, supports what I want to do, cleanly, reliably, and as far as I can tell, efficiently too. The screen doesn't feel cluttered at all, and I have set my terminal as konsole, so that way I get the motd, cool schemas as well as tabbed terminal windows. Konsole also allows transparency, although is a bit shaky, I admit. All in all though, the improvements are hard to see from the screenshots. But, I'm sure that the improvements are probably in the performance because Xfce is already of such a high quality and small footprint. As for the icons on the desktop, I used to enjoy that with the old 3.8.* version, and missed the fact that one could also change the colour of the panel and that icons would load on your desktop with the 4.* generation.

Oh well. I agree, it would be nice if the latest, stable, Xfce shipped with Slackware 11.0, but I suspect that Pat won't touch it unless it's stable ;)

I dunno, maybe I'm biased but Enlightenment E17 is the environment that's hard to beat. :)

You can go to www.xfce.org and follow the instructions to do an SVN checkout. 4.4 is still beta.
