Easiest way to run Xfce 4.12 under Slackware is either to install -current, use Robby Workman's packages or my own MLED.

He gave you 3 different options.

You can either upgrade Slackware to -current, which is a development version that will lead to the next stable release. It has much newer software, and while it is usually bug free, some will still slip through. There's plenty of guides to switch to -current.

Install Robby Workman's packages (he's part of the dev team for Slackware itself). I've quoted below the pertinent info from his changelog on the best way to install the upgraded XFCE. You can grab the 32bit packages here and the 64bit packages here:

Quote:
Several folks have asked for it, so here you are. I'd suggest removing the
entire xfce/ package set included in 14.1 and then install these new.
Alternatively, an invocation of "upgradepkg --install-new" should catch
everything, but note that you need to removepkg xfwm4-themes afterward.
Last option is to use kikinovac's MLED, which is a stripped (optimized) version of Slackware that is mostly stock, but has upgraded XFCE packages. You can view the instructions on his site that he linked and see more info on the project. It is fully compatible with Slackware packages.

I think your first step should be to spend some time here:

http://docs.slackware.com/

Read all the basic stuff and get comfortable with it.

My easy route would be: remove the 4.12 packages (each and every one of the modules), reinstall XFCE from Slackware-14.1, get Robby Workman's* full source tree (post #2) and run 'xfce-build-all.sh'...

How do you managed to install XFCE to '/usr/local/'?

*You can use rsync.

Are you saying your old packages are still there? You have to use upgradepkg to upgrade to the new ones and replace the old ones.

Why should he rebuild them? They're already built for Slackware 14.1. No need to go through that chore, since Robby already did all the work.

Just download all packages from Robby's repo, and then:

Code:
# upgradepkg --reinstall --install-new *.t?z

Please read the Slackware documentation before doing something like you would do. Otherwise you'll discover a world of pain and frustration.

Slackware is a bare-bones distribution with - nearly - no automatic configuration, so reading the documentation is mandatory.
