XDM crash

XDM starts and never gets "graphical" or to any login prompt. I need to edit a file in my /etc/rc.d/ and I dont know how to do it.

I dloaded Knoppix but when I edit the file, it says how its on a read-only filesystem, same goes for chmod!

How to edit files without login?

Thanks a lot.

Boot with knoppix (or any live-cd) and then:

# mkdir /mnt/slack
# mount /dev/hdX /mnt/slack

(hdX = where is slack partition)

# chroot /mnt/slack /bin/bash

and now you can edit the file

# exit
# reboot
