Xcrashes on old pc, need rtf console editor

Writing this from Lynx in console mode on Slackware 13.37...basically I have an old AMD 3300 32/64 with a weird monitor and 5+ different distros on it...Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10, slackware/salix/nfluxos 13.37-14.0-14.1 and 14.2 in all cases all web browsers crash constantly and even X winnndow itself crashes sometimes or screen freezes...it never did this before but it has bs sis integrated graphics so I have to use a vesa xorg.cfg in all distros. I'm writing stories and so have had to revert to console but cannot find a RTF output text editor/word processor for any distro...does anyone know of a console/text based editor that can output RTF files??
thanks!

You could use LaTeX to format documents. All you need is a decent ascii text editor such as emacs, vi, nano, whatever.

Hi,

Do you have the mesa package installed? If so, your xorg server tries to load the swrast driver, which is a Gallium 3D driver by default. It's too much for your CPU, when all you have is the vesa xorg driver. If I were you, I would remove the mesa drivers (you have them in either /usr/lib/dri or /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri directory). This should make your week 2D xorg server more stable. Additionally, this will prevent your web browser to load the contents requiring the opengl support.

.
