xcdroast copy on the fly problem
 

i've just recently managed to get my CDR working, but now i have a problem with xcdroast. when i want to copy an audio cd on the fly, it won't let me and it gives me a warning message that says:

with your version of the cdrtools only pure data CDs are supported for on-the-fly copy. a newer version might support audio on-the-fly copy.

so to fix this i noted that in the README that comes w/ xcdroast it says:

A recent release of the cdrtools is required.
Version 2.0 or newer is recommended. 2.01a14 or newer for
audio-on-the-fly support.

ok, so then i downloaded the most current cdrtools i saw on freshmeat (2.01a16) and did the usual make-install. even after i installed this updated version of cdrtools and then reinstalled xcdroast, it still gave me this problem.

i can copy cds only by writing to the hard drive first, and this wastes a lot of time. i'd like to fix this, but i'm almost out of things to try. i think i might have to compile xcdroast w/ explicit flagging to the location of the new cdrtools (i'll try it) or i may have to uninstall and reinstall xcdroast. btw, how do i uninstall programs i've installed from source? can i still use removepkg?

I think explicit flagging to the new cdrtools is a good idea. Left over settings from a previous install could be messing stuff up (that's all I could think of). Also, did you do make distclean before you reinstalled?
I think uninstalling won't help further, reinstalling would just copy over... Not 100% on that tho. The (only) thing i can definitely help you with tho is to recommend checkinstall (http://asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/check...l/download.php). If you use this instead of make install when you compile from source it'll allow you to uninstall with pkgtool. If you read the docs it's pretty straightforward too. That won't hope with this one tho... just in the future. Best of luck with it.

this problem was stupid: i had to uninstall xcdroast (using make uninstall in src directory) and then reinstall using the flagging for the location of cdrtools. that done, i copied a cd on the fly and got really ass copying speed (8x when it should go at 16x).

suggestions on why the burn speed wouldn't go much over 8x?
