X11 problems after kernel upgrade (2.4.29->2.6.10)

On an old Sony Vaio PCG-R505CT laptop I just upgraded the kernel from Slackware 10.1 default 2.4.29 to 2.6.10. While X works perfectly in 2.4, it has some peculiarities in 2.6 :

Using the exact same xorg.conf file as before, X11 now has severe problems with the colour black. It loads fine, but doesn't update the screen properly. After running "startx", the screen goes "static gray" (ie. lots of noise on the screen etc), before it displays the KDE startup-window. Once in KDE all the menus are somewhat transparet (not configured to be so!) and when moving a window on screen, it leaves marks on its previous location.

The VGA card onboard is VGA Compatible controller: Intel Corp 82815 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 11) and I use the xorg.conf copied from this excellent site: http://www.james.rcpt.to/2001/vaio505ct.html

Note that when booting kernel 2.4.29 it still works beautifully (though with some other, different problems) with black and colours and no transparent problems etc. Thus I assume that the problem is in my kernel somewhere. Have included pretty much EVERYTHING under Devices->Graphics controller, but still no luck...

Thanks in advance for any insight

Upgrade to Xorg X11R6.8.2.

Fixed a lot of screen corruption problems on the integrated intel chipsets. Or if you want to stay with X11R6.8.1 disable 2d acceleration.

Thanks chbin - I'm now in the process of upgrading to -current and will report back if it works...

Just out of curiosity - I may have googled to widely to get a good response, but how exactly do I disable 2d acceleration - in the kernel or xorg.conf? What's the parameter?

Option NoAccel "True" under the video device section in xorg.conf. If all the screen corruption goes away then you know what the problem is. You can stay with 6.8.1 without any 2d accel, but I'd recommend upgrading.
