X11 6.8.1 in slack-current branch

thought you guys just might want the heads-up. I'm still debading if I want to use it, though, since I hear that transparency is a real hog and the new features are still pretty buggy....

BrianW 09-23-2004 08:57 PM

I am running it currently, but have not encountered any bugs *yet*

Don;t use transparency, but I do use Fluxbox :P

reddazz 09-23-2004 09:24 PM

Same here, it seems to be running absolutely fine at the moment.

kodon 09-23-2004 11:01 PM

also running without problems

and also haven't enabled transparency

Doesn't work for me, but it's an issue with radeons drivers. Strangely, it doesn't even work for me with the radeon driver that comes with it though. Never had that happen before..

No big deal.. going to sit at 6.7 until ati grows a brain and decides to actually write a driver for the new stuff. At least I'm thankful that I finally can get decent 3d performance in slackware compared to windows with the new driver.

If like me you end up going forward and it doesn't work, all I did was removepkg x11* and then just set swaret to 10.0 to redownload the 6.7 stuff.

I've got 6.8.1 running on Slackware 10 with the radeon driver - seems to work flawlessly although the 3D performance is still turtleish. xanas, maybe you should run the xorgconfig program - that worked for me with regards to setting up the radeon. I don't know how to turn on transparent windows and shadows, can someone tell me? Do you need a special theme?

xanas3712 09-24-2004 04:17 AM

nirvanix, I assume you are running the fglrx driver then if you have 3d at all :) What version? Also which radeon are you using? Thanks.

gbonvehi 09-24-2004 04:22 AM

nirvanix, you need to run xcompmgr, read the man on how to use it. Also to make a window transparent you need another little program called transset. I don't know if they come with Slack's X package (i'm using linuxpackages.net's ones), if they don't come with it, goto linuxpackages, find the X11 package and hit download, that will take you to a dir with the packages of X11, just select xcompmgr and you're done.

nirvanix 09-24-2004 04:23 AM

No i'm not running the fglrx driver - it doesn't work with 6.8.1. I'm running the 'radeon' driver that came with 6.8.1 and it does run the 3D albeit slowly. My card is an 8500LE.

xanas3712 09-24-2004 04:33 AM

aha.. well yeah that makes sense. I don't get 3d cause my card is above the 9200 series. I have a 9800 pro..

nirvanix 09-24-2004 04:46 AM

Thanks gbonvehi. I'll give it a try!

r_jensen11 09-24-2004 01:50 PM

I don't know, I tried using xorgconfig but I can't get glx gears to get any decent number, I'll try again when I get home, but it seemed pretty low. All I know is that in order to fix my system, I'm going to have to pull out disk 2 of the slack install again....

nirvanix 09-24-2004 02:13 PM

I agree, glxgears runs dismally with the radeon driver included in X 8.6.1, at least on kernel 2.4.26. I get about 250 fps - which translates to a slideshow for quake or UT.

shilo 09-24-2004 04:11 PM

I'm running the new X server with a POS SiS 315Pro. It doesn't support DRI. I now get ~150FPS with glxgears, which is an improvement (sad, I know).

I'm getting around 116fps for the radeon drivers for 6.7.0 (not the fglrx drivers). I'll reinstall 6.8.0 to check the speed for that if I can read the numbers. It seems like all I can get are scan lines when I'm using something other than programs like Unreal Tournament (which runs fine on my Radeon 8500, havn't noticed a difference really for in-game, but it's on the desktop usage like Firefox or anything that doesn't blank the screen that is messed up. I'll try to figure out what the problem is, but I'm running out of ideas, I want to keep my system a Slack10.0 with some current packages, not a current with some 10.0 packages.

Edit: after enabling dri for 6.7.0 for the radeon drivers, I don't have any problems, and glxgears runs at around 1500-1600fps using the radeon drivers. I guess I'll just stick with this for now then, maybe I can play half-life!
