X, xorg.conf, and Slackware

I did some searching on this site and using google and was not able to get this working. I just reinstalled Slackware 10 on my system. It installed just fine and gets me to the command line. The problem started when I went to run startx. I keep getting the Sync Out of Range error on my monitor. I searched around and found some ranges to try, but still nothing. It could have something to do with the fact that I have a different video card in the system now. I was running a GeForce 2 MX 64 MB...now I have a GeForce 5200. But it doesn't stop there...it gets even weirder. Now when I use vi to edit the xorg.conf file it displays entirely in hex. I have no idea what to do now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First, if you have another monitor, try another monitor.

I don't know what the problem is, but I had a friend's Windows box do exactly the same thing with a new video card. The monitor would not work with that card, and that under Windows XP.

Never heard of it before that.

They have a 20" or 21" Sun.

Did you use the nvidia drivers ? (if you don't know, that means you don't use them)
Is the /etc/X11/xorg.conf is seen in hex when doing : cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Maybe all you have to do is run /usr/X11/bin/xorgsetup as root, who knows ?

Do you only have Slack installed? If you can boot into another version of Linux you can mount the Slack partition and edit the xorg.conf from there and copy the values that work on the host system
